I am thinking of having hair transplants. I live in San Francisco. Anyone advice or MD recommendatio

I used to be obsessed with hair transplants, how they work, etc., even though I've always had a full head of hair and I have no family history of anyone going bald on either side of my family.

So, I think I know a little more than the average person regarding hair transplants after doing some research on it. I sent away for a lot of those free videos/booklets from Bosley, etc.

My best advice to you is to shop around and see who you are comfortable with. Which doctor actually cares enough to answer your every question without making you feel rushed? Which one offers the best as far as care before and after the surgery? (Yes, it's surgery.) Just use common sense. And no, price shouldn't be a factor. If one doctor seems better than another yet he or she is more expensive, it's better to be safe yet lose more money than sorry after saving some bucks.

Do hair transplants work and/or do they look "natural?" That's a matter of debate. In my opinion, they almost always look noticeable, but it depends on the hair transplant itself how "easy" it is to tell that the hair on some guy's or girl's head is "fake." Some look horrible (the dreaded "dollhead" look) while some look somewhat natural (see MSNBC's Dan Abrams).

I've found that the more bald you are, the worse the transplant looks. That's because while they can recreate your hairline upfront nearest to your forehead, the dead giveaway is the fact that they leave the hairline near your temples untouched. If the hairline near the temples are way back yet the rest of the transplanted hairline is very upfront, the whole thing ends up looking VERY unnatural.

So, if you're just bald in the back of your head (the crown), a hair transplant is a good option for you. If you're bald from forehead to crown, just go "natural" and shave your head. You'll end up looking better and actually younger than if you just kept your hair on the back and sides.
